Zits or pimples (or whatever you want to call them) are the bane of young people everywhere, but can appear on anyone at anytime anywhere.

What is Acne?

Acne is technically a skin disease that appears when your hair follicles, (the pores in your skin) become stuffed with skin cells and oil. Once clogged, the pore will begin to fill with bacteria. Once the pore starts filling with bacteria your body’s immune system goes into effect. This causes the signature swelling and redness. You will be able to tell a condition is acne from the signature black or white heads, greasy skin and pimples and in extreme cases can leave scars behind.

These are traditionally the bane of the teenager, but almost half of people still have acne well into their thirties, and around 4% will have it into their 40’s. Acne will show up in areas of your skin that produce the most oil. The moist oily areas of the body are the face, chest, and back. Although there are many steps you can take towards prevention and elimination, genetics plays a huge role in the health of your skin.

(Acne Rosacea is another possible culprit with many of the same symptoms. Luckily it also has many of the same treatments. If nothing seems to be working consult a dermatologist for evaluation.)

The Types of Acne

There are actually two different types of acne: inflammatory and noninflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne is what happens when your body is trying to protect you against an actual infection. This will be red and painful and can lead to more serious issues like scarring. Non-Inflammatory Acne is the more regular whiteheads and blackheads, which occur due to a clogged hair follicle swelling.

Whiteheads and Blackheads

When a pore becomes blocked by a combination of oil and dead skin cells, it is referred to as a comedo. The trapped bacteria begins growing underneath and causes a raised look. If skin covers the comedo, it will have a white appearance and be referred to as a whitehead. If the pore remains open, then the oil in the pore will darken, causing a black appearance -and thus a blackhead. Blackheads and Whiteheads are typically the most common form of acne and will affect almost everyone at least a few times in their life.  Knowing how to get rid of whiteheads means you also know how to get rid of blackheads.

Prolonged exposure to sunlight over many years can cause what is known as Favre-Racouchot Syndrome which refers to a relatively large area of damaged skin having multiple open comedones.

Body Acne

Not all acne will appear on your face, in fact, more than 50% of people who have face acne will also have pimples somewhere on their body. Usually, acne will show up as pimples on back or chest, due to the amount of oil on the skin in these areas, but can also appear anywhere on the body containing the sebaceous follicles (everywhere but the palms and soles of your feet). The skin on your body is much thicker and contains larger pores; this means blockages are rarer, but can be much larger when they do appear.

As many people who have to wear equipment for sports, or do an activity that causes constant rubbing against your skin, will know; anything that causes constant irritation to your skin can cause a breakout. Clothing covered in sweat constantly being ground and rubbed into your skin is a huge contributor to body acne. Inflammatory Acne

When your acne becomes painful red bumps, they are named papules. Sometimes these fill with pus and are then called pustules.

There are hundreds of acne solutions, with almost every culture sporting their unique versions. We are going to try and focus on the solutions that either utilizes items you have around the home, are the most efficient, or can require only basic supplies.  There are some more clinical strength solutions out there, but most of those need a doctor prescription due to the effect they can have on your skin and the chemicals they contain. Any Acne treatment can take 4-8 weeks to be effective. There is no actual “How to get rid of pimples overnight.” or “How to get rid of zits overnight.” Though some people’s skin may heal faster than others, the time it takes is entirely dependent on many factors.

How to Prevent Acne From Apprearing

Acne prevention is a lifestyle choice and honestly can warrant an entire blog post itself.  Your diet, level of exercise, body type and many other things all play a role in how your body reacts to and goes about deciding to prevent pimples.

There are a number of rules to follow if you are serious about preventing acne:

  • Wash your Face

You should be doing this morning and night regardless of whether or not you have any issues with pimples (unless your skin starts to become too oily in response, then you should cut back… I know it’s confusing). Nice warm water and a soap that isn’t harsh on your skin will gently carry away the oils and skin cells that clog the pores. If you exfoliate, do so gently and sparingly -once a week should be enough. Do NOT use hot water on your face, it will open the pores and cause acne bacteria to multiply more easily.

  • Get More Sleep

Good sleep keeps your body working well and reduces stress levels. The first part and its benefits are obvious; the stress thing may be the most important, however. Stress increases glucocorticoid production, which may create unhealthy and weak skin. Sleep will also keep your skin tighter and brighter giving you a better appearance overall.

Note: when you sleep, keep your room properly ventilated. Use air conditioner on your room, if you are using only a fan, make sure it has a proper air flow slightly touching your face. Never ever sleep on a room with no extra ventilation devices such as air conditioners or fans. People who suffer from acne tend to get dirtier while they are sleeping, so only opening  the windows is not a good choice.

Also NEVER sleep with a dirty face, this is really important, your skin is already clogged with dirt oil, and because of improper air flow, it is an ideal ground for acne bacteria to grow because of the dark and lack of oxygen. It’s also important not to blow the fan right into your face while sleeping. This will ironically dry your face skin, worsening your acne.

  • Stop Touching your face

Your hand contains a whole bunch of oils that can be transferred into your pores as your touch or rest your face in your hands. Popping acne can also cause further adverse effects like scarring. There is little benefit to picking and touching marks, and in fact, it will only make things worse! Summary: Popping pimples is a bad choice.

  • Stay out of the Sun

Too much sunlight can damage and weaken your skin. This can cause an increase in redness and inflammation. Wear sunscreen of a decent SPF and limit your exposure to the sun during midday. This will also help prevent other skin conditions caused by UV rays like cancer.

  • Exercise

This helps you in every possible way. It keeps your body functioning correctly and provides it the strength to resist any issues. Make sure to avoid tight clothing or constant rubbing in certain areas to prevent an acne breakout. Shower soon after!

  • Moisturize

Make sure the moisturizer you’re using is noncomedogenic. That means it won’t contribute to your acne. There are types made for all versions of skin (you should try and determine where on the spectrum of dry to oily you sit). Moisturizer will also help repair any damage done to your skin by harsh cosmetics, or acne medications you are using. Best used in tandem with anti-acne medications.

 

Use a Healing Mask To Clear Skin

Cinnamon and Honey Mask

  3. Apply to entire face or do a spot treatment.
  4. Let sit for 10-15 min.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

Honey and Avocado Mask For Pimples

A great homemade acne treatment. Very similar to the other mask, though you are sacrificing a bit of the cinnamons punching power against bacteria for the vitamins and nutrients, the avocado brings to your skin. This mask may be better as a regular treatment or preventative measure rather than purely eliminating acne, as the cinnamon mask is explicitly created around. Once your acne clears up, use this mask at least once a week to keep your skin clean and healthy.

  1. Rinse face and pat dry.
  2. Turn one Avocado into a paste (without skin and pit of course silly).
  3. Mix with a tablespoon of honey and apply to entire face or do a spot treatment.
  4. Let sit for 10-15 min.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is recommended to be used as everything from a household cleaner to a cure for athlete’s foot. This vinegar became so recognized due to its potent antibacterial properties. Not only does it kill bacteria it comes into contact with, it also raises balances the PH level of your skin making it less hospitable for future bacteria as well. Apple Cider Vinegar is also good for treating dark circles under eyes. Like lemon juice, vinegar will also utilize its astringent properties to remove oil from your skin.

For those who don’t know what an astringent is, its basically a liquid that can contract the skin, protecting and reducing the bleeding from minor cuts.

Here is a homemade astringent solution for how to remove acne at home:

  1. Rinse face and pat dry.
  2. Go 3 parts water to one part A.C. Vinegar
  3. Use cotton ball to apply directly to affected area.
  4. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

Don’t overdo it as it can dry out your skin and force your body to compensate by overproducing oil in the future.

Aloe Vera Can Help

Used more commonly to treat skin damage from sunburn, aloe vera also contains a number of nutrients and properties that make it effective in reducing the size and spread of acne. The anti-inflammatory properties also prevent giant pimples from showing up.

Go for Aloe Vera with as few added properties as you can find.  The closer to the original plant, the better. Just apply the gel directly to the problem area, let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.

Change Your Diet

Though there has been no final A to B evidence, people have been conscious of the effect diet has had on skin health for a few centuries now. Many doctors think this connection stems from insulin levels, the amount of sugar in your body, when not properly absorbed can possibly lead to increased amounts of acne. Reduce your sugar intake and give your body a chance to balance out its insulin level through the day.

Eating many small meals a day rather than a couple of large ones will assist in this balancing process. Stick with vegetables and you can’t go wrong. Vitamins for acne treatment can’t be a bad choice to make.

Another dietary source of acne that isn’t completely proven yet is diary. Try cutting dairy out of your diet and see if there is any improvement to your skin health. If not go back to eating it. Give it at least a month to see any small effects.

Eat more fish rich in omega-3s -this is another super ingredient that seems to magically help every aspect of your life.

Treating Acne Scars and Marks

People with severe forms of acne will very often be left with small scars and blemishes where the acne once was (it’s important you have your acne problem under control before you begin treating scars). Many cortisone and fade creams can be used for the smaller less severe marks that are red or swollen.

So here is how to get rid of acne scars:

  • For darker spots look for products contain Kojic acid, arbutin (also called bearberry extract), and vitamin C. These are all great ingredients for lightening creams. This is how you get rid of spots that are no longer zits, but rather darkened skin.
  • More mild scars may require microdermabrasions or chemical peels to improve complexion.
  • For severe problems, dermabrasion and laser therapy may be your only recourse as an acne scar treatment. Both methods involve purposefully damaging the top layer of skin in order to get a new healthy layer to grow in its place. This will almost always permanently get rid of acne marks.

Those are really the only effective methods for how to get rid of acne scars. There are a few home remedies for acne scars but the results are dubious. Try applying a lemon juice and honey mixture with a cotton bowl on the area and look for any change.
